Club History

"Just a Few Boys from Pacoima"
The Continental Chronology (1969 - 2002)

In 1969, the Continental Golf Club was formed by a small group of young men from Pacoima who just loved the game of golf. The first meeting was held at the home of Robert (R. L.) Thomas in April 1969. R. L. is still an active member of the club, 33 years later with a 9 handicap. Other founding members were Dan Carter, (the club's first president), Art Collins, Leon Passmore, Earl McCaw, Bill Commack, John Anderson, James Ayo, Governor Boyd, Alex Davis, Bob Easterling, Mel Glover, McKinley Johnson, Ozzie Marshall, George Street, Lee Volt, and Emmitt West.

The first 10 years of the club's existence (1970-1980) was a period of robust growth and geographical expansion. As a charter member of the Western States Golf Association, (WSGA) Continental members have played a significant role in expanding the enjoyment of the game of golf throughout the West. Earl McCaw served as an early President of WSGA and Bill Commack served as Tournament Chairman. The name "Continental" was chosen to denote the club's proclivity for traveling the world in pursuit of golfing adventures.

From 1981 - 1990, Continental literally "took over" the Hansen Dam Golf Course in Pacoima. There always seemed to be a group of Continental members on the course 7 days a week, 12 hours a day. The competition was fierce and the excitement was electric.

During 1991 - 2002, this was the maturation period in Continental's history. Regularly scheduled tournaments were staged throughout Southern California, working committees, were formed, bylaws adopted, membership grew to the mid 70's, and the club operated like an efficient "fun" machine with members taking turns to serve the club in some capacity.

Then in 1999, Continental introduced the concept of "Challenge Matches" between WSGA clubs as a vehicle to raise money for Scholarships. The concept caught on and continues to generate intense competition and camaraderie between clubs in the area. The success of these "Challenge Matches" inspired Continental to launch an annual 2-day competition between all clubs in the WSGA Southern Area, starting in August, 2000. This 2-day shoot-out has now become an annual highlight of the Southern California golfing season. The club continues it's rich legacy of coming up with creative and innovative ways to extract the maximum fun out of the game of golf.
